Strasburg, Pennsylvania Town Bullets

One of the best preserved historic towns in America, Strasburg contains more original
18th-century buildings than Williamsburg, Virginia.

One of the first Pennsylvania towns to have a common school system, and its public
school system was a model for others.

A unique, 173 year-old, short-line railroad was developed by residents and is still in
operation today.

The town name Strasburg first appeared in public records in 1711 and is the site of
the first settlement in Lancaster County.

The towns growth was stunted because it was twice bypassed, first when present-day route 30 was paved in the 1790's, and became Pennsylvania's first turnpike, and secondly when it was bypassed by the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad. While these retarded the town's growth they are also, in large measure, the reason why so many early buildings escaped destruction.
